It’s peek scholarship time at your Community Foundation. Our Board Scholarship Committee is actively reviewing the applications for the 13 scholarships they are responsible for with over 200 applications to read and review. Plus we have over 60 other scholarship review committees that are actively reviewing the applications for their particular scholarship. Our thanks go to board member Dr. Kirk Nooks and his 12 member committee of board members and advisory board members for all of their efforts as well as the hundreds of other community members serving on scholarship review committees. All of this work is skillfully supported by Rachael Watkins on our staff team who is juggling a tremendous number of balls at this time of year. All of this activity will result in approximately $250,000 in financial support provided to students through over 200 scholarship awards. A reminder to our many donors who have a scholarship fund at your Community Foundation, that a smart way to make additional contributions to your scholarship fund if you are 70 ½ years of age or older is to use your IRA. Your scholarship fund meets the requirements for a Qualified Charitable Distribution directly from your IRA to your scholarship fund. And this direct distribution of up to $100,000 counts toward your RMD (required minimum distribution). This is often referred to as a Charitable IRA Rollover , since in making the gift it is a rollover directly from your IRA to your scholarship fund. There are several advantages to using your IRA to fund your scholarship fund and you can find more information at thcf.org .
