Creating a Legacy - Talking about Your Legacy

When is a good time to talk to your loved ones about a legacy plan? How about over Sunday dinner, during halftime, or while washing dishes? Whenever you are all in a comfortable space, that could be the right time.

When is a good time to talk to your loved ones about a legacy plan? How about over Sunday dinner, during halftime, or while washing dishes? Whenever you are all in a comfortable space, that could be the right time. While no one wants to dwell on the thought of losing a loved one, there are ways to share your intentions and learn the intentions of those you love.

Here are some great ways to start the conversation off on a positive and uplifting note:

  • What would you like to change or preserve in the world?
  • Do you feel you have any obligations you have not yet fulfilled?
  • Your last will and testament is your final teaching. What do you want it to say?
  • Beyond self and family, is there anything else in the world on which you would like to have a positive impact?

As you can see, the conversation is not about who gets what or how much. It’s best to leave those technical aspects to your financial advisor or attorney. These conversation starters get to the heart of the matter; the legacy you will leave behind for the next generation. Don’t put it off because you don’t know where to begin. Start the giving conversation today so they know where your passions lie and can ensure your charitable legacy continues.
