On Saturday, September 26, 2020 Truman Heartland Community Foundation had the honor of hosting the 25th Annual Toast to Our Towns Gala. Presented by CommunityAmerica Credit Union , this year's virtual event recognized the people, businesses and organizations that have made a significant impact in our region. Throughout the event, Gala emcee Mark Alford, used Zoom to check in with six area mayors who were hosting small watch parties with their Citizens of the Year in their cities. At the main stage, Truman Heartland recognized Brent Schondelmeyer and Lee Williams as the Heartland Humanitarians of the Year, Speaks Chapels as the Heartland Corporate Citizen of the Year, Junior Service League of Independence received the Heartland Service Award and Adam Kliethermes was awarded the Dr. Paul M. Thomson Professional Advisor Award. The Community Foundation’s first virtual celebration of philanthropy, the success of this event was due to support from community. Broadcast support was provided by GEHA and Truckmovers . Centerpoint Medical Center sponsored the Heartland Citizens’ Reception, a small pre-Gala event for the Citizens of the Year. Furthermore, Truman Heartland is thankful for the leadership of Gala Committee chair Candy White and our dynamic Gala Committee, Tracey Mershon who chaired the Gala Sponsorship Committee and all of the individuals and business who joined in the celebration from their homes or from one of the watch parties held throughout Eastern Jackson County.
