Students Strike it Big at Annual Fundraiser

Our Youth Advisory Council raised $3,790 for local charities at their annual fundraiser Strike in the Night on February 9th at Lunar Bowl in Blue Springs.

In addition to providing a fun, safe environment for high school students on a Saturday night, Strike in the Night is an important opportunity for YAC students to experience the planning, fundraising and execution of a fundraising event. All of the event’s proceeds contribute to the YAC endowment fund, which provides grants to area nonprofits.

In 2018, YAC students reviewed 24 grant proposals and awarded $4,010 to 15 local youth-serving charities.

“My experience in YAC truly taught me the value of philanthropy,” said Nicolette Bowman, YAC graduate from William Chisman. “Seeing the individual lives we affected, interacting with the caring organizations hopeful enough to believe that their efforts can make a difference, and interacting with my peers who have that same hope, inspired me to look past the option of apathy and instead, inspired me to give my time to a progressive coalition of exceptional individuals.”

Truman Heartland’s Youth Advisory Council engages 190 students annually from 13 high schools in Eastern Jackson County. YAC students gain hands-on experience in fundraising, grantmaking and volunteering. Learn more about Youth Advisory Council at https://www.thcf.org/Initiatives-Impact/Youth-Advisory-Council
